Three people taken into custody in Hilton Head park shooting that injured man
Police are still searching for two minors in a group of five believed to be involved in a shooting that injured a man at a Hilton Head park Saturday afternoon, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office alert.
The five people were allegedly trying to break into a vehicle when they were “interrupted” by a man, the alert stated.
At 4:45 p.m. deputies responded to reported gunfire at Lowcountry Celebration Park, near the Pope Avenue parking lot along Coligny Beach. A wounded man was found in the area and taken to Hilton Head Hospital for treatment.
Three of the five, all male, were seen running toward a nearby restaurant. Police found two guns among their belongings. Two others who were minors, a boy and a girl, were able to get away, authorities said.
According to Maj. Bob Bromage with the Sheriff’s Office, two of the three who fled the scene, who were also minors, were petitioned to Family Court for breaking into a motor vehicle and unlawful possession of a handgun. The third person, an adult, was not charged. Police are still working to identify the remaining two.
None of the people who were charged were named in the alert because they are minors. Police are still determining the charges against them, according to the alert.
