2 people injured + 3 cars and several homes hit in Beaufort shooting Sunday night
At least two people were injured in a shooting at an outdoor gathering near the Elks Lodge in Beaufort on Sunday night, according to a Beaufort Police Department report.
An officer with the Beaufort Police Department was called out to the intersection of Church Street and Washington Street in Beaufort around 8:37 p.m. after multiple people reported shots fired in the area. The officer who arrived at the scene reported a crowd of people running.
The people involved in the incident had been attending a gathering at the Elks Lodge, Beaufort Police Department spokesperson Capt. George Erdel said. They were not in the building but outside.
One injured person had been taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital, and a second also was transported there. Both had serious injuries and later were transferred to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, Erdel said.
An update on their status was not available as of Monday afternoon.
Witnesses told police that they heard the shots coming through a fence from a nearby residence on Duke Street. Several nearby homes were hit by bullets and a total of three cars, one with a bullet hole through its driver’s side window, were also hit.
As of Monday afternoon, no suspects were in custody, and the investigation is ongoing.
