Woman struck by car on Hilton Head road marks county’s 2nd pedestrian death in 3 days

A pedestrian — the second in three days — was killed after being struck on a Beaufort County roadway early Friday.

The latest fatality happened on Hilton Head Island’s U.S. 278 near Spanish Wells Road, according to a S.C. Highway Patrol news release.

A 2017 Mazda3 was traveling west at midnight when it struck a person who was crossing the roadway, Master Trooper Brian Lee said.

The pedestrian was identified as Lisa Christian, 58, from Bluffton, Beaufort County deputy coroner Debbie Youmans said. Christian died from her injuries at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle was a Bluffton man, according to Highway Patrol.

No charges have been filed in the collision, and it is under investigation by Highway Patrol.

About 20 people have died this year in crashes in Beaufort County, five of whom were pedestrians, according to the latest data from the state Department of Public Safety. On Tuesday, a pedestrian died after being hit by a Freightliner truck around 4:30 a.m. on Parris Island Gateway.
