Tractor-trailer hit a pedestrian Tuesday morning on Parris Island Gateway, SCHP says
A pedestrian was killed early Tuesday morning when a Freightliner struck the person on Parris Island Gateway, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The crash took place on S.C. 21 and Coinbow Loop around 4:30 a.m., Highway Patrol Trooper Nick Pye said. The 2017 Freightliner tractor trailer and the pedestrian were both heading north on S.C. 21, Pye said. The Freightliner struck the pedestrian, Pye said. The driver of the tractor trailer was wearing a seat belt and was not injured, he said.
The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office is working to identify the pedestrian, according to Coroner David Ott.
All lanes of S.C. 21 heading east were blocked from Horton Drive to Broad River Boulevard around 6 a.m., according to an alert from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office. The accident was cleared as of 6:25 a.m., according to a second alert.
Meagon Latham, who lives in Beaufort and drives on Parris Island Gateway every day, saw the crash around 5:10 a.m. while driving to work, she said.
“It looked like a semi vs. a pedestrian,” Latham said. “I never thought I would see something like that in my life. I wish people would pay attention and watch their surroundings.”
Latham did not see another car involved, she said.
About 20 people have died in 2021 from crashes in Beaufort County, according to the latest data from the department of public safety. Four pedestrians have died in the county this year. This is the second pedestrian to be killed on Parris Island Gateway in 2021.
The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
