Coroner identifies 22-year-old man killed in weekend crash on Jasper County road
A Hardeeville man was identified as the driver killed in the Saturday afternoon crash on S.C. 46 in Jasper County, according to the local coroner’s office.
Yeyzin Alexander Velasquez, 22, died following a two-car crash Saturday afternoon, according to Jasper County Coroner Willie P. Aiken III. He was pronounced dead at the scene around 3:30 p.m., Aiken said.
The crash occurred at 3:15 p.m. near Coleman Loop, according to S.C. Highway Patrol Cpl. Matt Southern.
Velasquez was driving a 2003 Chevy Impala east on S.C. 46 while a 2001 GMC Sierra pickup truck was traveling west, Southern said.
The GMC crossed the center line and struck Velasquez’s vehicle head on, according to police.
Velasquez was not wearing a seat belt, Southern said. The driver of the GMC was transported to Savannah Memorial Hospital for treatment, Southern said, adding it’s unknown if that driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
The driver of the GMC was charged with driving left of center, Southern said, and the crash is still under investigation by Highway Patrol.
At least eight people died on the road in South Carolina over the weekend, and a total of 16 people have died in 2021 in traffic-related incidents in Jasper County, according to data from the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.
