One arrest, one in critical condition after Wednesday shooting in Hardeeville. What we know

A Hardeeville man has been charged after a shooting at a Days Inn left another in critical condition Wednesday afternoon, police say.

Kelvin Anderson, 38, of Hardeeville was charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon in the commission of a violent crime and giving false information to law enforcement Wednesday afternoon after police say he shot a man at Days Inn on Whyte Hardee Boulevard, according to a press release from the City of Hardeeville.

Officers from the Hardeeville Police Department responded to a call about a gunshot victim around 1:25 p.m. Wednesday at the Days Inn, the city wrote. When officers arrived, the press release said, they found a man who had been shot in the torso. The Hardeeville Fire Department and Jasper County EMS responded to the scene around 2 p.m. Wednesday, said department spokesperson and Assistant Chief Joey Rowell. The man was airlifted to Savannah Memorial Health, Rowell said.

Around 6:35 p.m., detectives from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office and the Hardeeville Police Department searched Anderson’s hotel room after obtaining a warrant. He was placed under arrest and taken to the Jasper County Detention Center without incident, according to the press release.

The man who was shot was in critical condition as of Thursday, the press release said.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information may contact Detective Andrew Maisano from the Hardeeville Police Department at (843)784-2233.

When we publish mugshots

The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette publishes police booking photos, or mugshots, in the following instances:

  • In situations where a public figure or someone in a position of public trust is arrested
  • In cases where there is an immediate and widespread threat to public safety
  • In cases where the arrested person is accused of a crime reporters have evidence to believe involved numerous, unknown victims

Reporters will avoid using mugshots as lead images for online articles in order to limit their circulation on social media, except in cases where the public is served by the immediate identification of the accused. Reporters and editors may use discretion in situations that don’t meet the criteria outlined in this policy but still present a compelling reason to publish a mugshot.
