Five people charged Wednesday after drug bust at Days Inn in Hardeeville, police say

Five people were arrested Wednesday as police were investigating a possible drug and prostitution ring at a Days Inn in Hardeeville.

Police responded to the Days Inn on Whyte Hardee Boulevard Wednesday afternoon after obtaining a search warrant, the Hardeeville Police Department said.

The warrant was a part of an ongoing investigation into “suspected prostitution and narcotics activity related to multiple subjects at this location,” according to a City of Hardeeville press release. Police had been looking into this case for several months, Police Lt. Steven Thomas said.

Jeremy Holmes, 28, of Savannah, Georgia; Kodi Smith, 28, of Bluffton; Ellen Alberg, 22, of Hilton Head; Chelsea Monzel, 22, of Bluffton were all charged with trafficking methamphetamine, possession with the intent to distribute heroin, possession of a weapon in the commission of a violent crime and possession of a “sawed-off” shotgun.

Trenton Ford, 33, of Bluffton was charged as a fugitive from justice. Smith also faced charges as a fugitive from justice. Thomas did not know the full charges against Ford or Smith, he said.

Asked Thursday about the prostitution charges, Thomas said, “that part of it is still ongoing.”

Multiple quantities of what police suspect were methamphetamine, heroin and fentanyl were seized, the Hardeeville press release said. Police also confiscated firearms, the release said.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office and the Hardeeville Police Department aided in the investigation, according to the press release.

When we publish mugshots

The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette publishes police booking photos, or mugshots, in the following instances:

  • In situations where a public figure or someone in a position of public trust is arrested
  • In cases where there is an immediate and widespread threat to public safety
  • In cases where the arrested person is accused of a crime reporters have evidence to believe involved numerous, unknown victims

Reporters will avoid using mugshots as lead images for online articles in order to limit their circulation on social media, except in cases where the public is served by the immediate identification of the accused. Reporters and editors may use discretion in situations that don’t meet the criteria outlined in this policy but still present a compelling reason to publish a mugshot.
