Lady’s Island man charged in fatal crash on Sam’s Point Road that killed two in September
The driver of the Nissan in the Sam’s Point Road crash in September that killed a young man and an elderly woman turned himself in and was charged Thursday morning, police said.
Christopher “Trenton” Few, 18, of Lady’s Island was charged Thursday with two counts of reckless homicide caused by injury from a vehicle, according to the Beaufort County Detention Center jail log. Few turned himself in to the Detention Center Thursday morning, South Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper Nick Pye said. The case is still under investigation, Pye said, and the speed of the vehicles has not been released.
If convicted of the felonies, Few could face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of between $1,000 and $5,000, according to S.C. law. His license may also be revoked for five years.
On Sept. 4, a Nissan sedan was heading north on Sam’s Point Road and a BMW sedan was making a left turn onto Sam’s Point Road from Attaway Lane around 7:38 p.m. when they crashed, Pye said in a news release at the time. The Nissan was carrying three passengers, and two people were riding in the BMW when they crashed, Pye said. Both drivers and a backseat passenger in the Nissan were transported to local hospitals, Pye said.
The passenger in the BMW, 84-year-old Rachel Poovey Navratil, of Beaufort, died at the scene from her injuries, Beaufort County Coroner David Ott told the Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette at the time. The passenger in the Nissan, Brandon Broach, 20, of Lancaster, South Carolina, was pronounced dead at 8:50 p.m. at Beaufort Memorial Hospital, Ott said.
Broach had a warm smile and loving heart, his online obituary said. He had an adventurous spirit and liked to be outdoors.
Navratil loved to sing, dance and laugh, according to her online obituary. She was described as a “lively, cheerful” woman who attracted fun wherever she went.
Few was hospitalized with fractured ribs, severely bruised lungs and a fractured femur, according to a GoFundMe page set up to raise money for medical expenses. He was released from the hospital in mid-September.
Few was released from the Beaufort County Detention Center on bond Thursday at 10:39 a.m., according to the detention center jail log.
The crash is still under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol with assistance from the Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team, Pye said.
