Resident at Beaufort senior home charged with attempted sexual assault, police say
A 74-year-old resident of a Beaufort senior home is accused of trying to sexually assault another resident, according to police.
The Beaufort Police Department on Tuesday morning charged Alan Seltzer, 74, a resident of Summit Place in Beaufort, with assault with intent to commit sexual assault, according to jail logs.
According to the arrest warrant, at 2 a.m. on Sept. 10, Seltzer went into another resident’s room and attempted to sexually assault her. She successfully fought him off.
Seltzer told staff he misunderstood what he thought was consensual, the warrant states.
It said the victim has “limited cognitive abilities, and (is) always escorted by staff.”
Seltzer is described as “a retired attorney who is suffering from advancing, degenerative brain disease,” in an unrelated lawsuit filed by his attorney.
Sexual abuse of the elderly is a widely under reported trend in the U.S. Over 1,000 nursing homes were cited with sexual abuse between 2013 and 2016, according to a CNN report.
