Man killed early Tuesday in Jasper County vehicle crash identified

A Savannah man died after his vehicle ran off the road and flipped into a ditch in Jasper County early Tuesday, according to officials.

Norris Ricardo Avery Jr., 51, of Savannah died of injuries sustained in the crash, according to Jasper County Coroner Martin Sauls.

Avery was driving on Sand Hills Road toward S.C. 119 about 1 a.m. when his vehicle went off the left side of the road, according the S.C. Highway Patrol Cpl. Sonny Collins.

Avery was the only occupant and was wearing a seat belt. His car came to rest in a ditch and overturned, said Collins.

An autopsy has not yet been scheduled, according to Sauls.

The crash is under investigation by SCHP.

This marks the 9th fatal crash in Jasper County in 2020, according to the S.C. Department of Public Safety. There were 19 fatal crashes in the county in 2019, and 11 in 2018, the data shows.
