Jasper County deputies responding to car crash find man with gunshot wound

A Jasper County man is in critical condition Tuesday after being found with a gunshot wound to the head near a car crash off U.S. 321, according to police.

Four Jasper County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to reports of a car crash just after 9:30 a.m. in the area of Dasher Road in Tarboro. They found a car without a driver that had hit a tree, said Jasper County Sheriff’s Office Det. Sgt. Jake Higgins.

Higgins said deputies searched further down the road and found the wounded man in a yard.

The victim was taken by EMS to a hospital and is in critical condition. Higgins said the agency did not know which hospital and declined to release the man’s name.

Witnesses said the man had been threatening to harm himself throughout the day, Higgins said.

No weapon has been located and the incident is under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.
