Off-duty nurse helped deputy with CPR on man fatally shot at Beaufort County pool party, report says

A Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office deputy and off-duty nurse worked to save the life of a 27-year-old man who was shot at a St. Helena Island pool party Monday night, a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office release and report says.

Despite those efforts, Malcom Moore of Beaufort died from an apparent gunshot wound while being transported by Beaufort EMS to Beaufort Memorial Hospital, the release said.

Beaufort County Maj. Bob Bromage said the party was held at a home in a rural residential area.

About 50 people or more were at the party when the shooting happened, Bromage said.

A Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office police report released Tuesday afternoon provides details of the moments directly after the shooting.

Police responded to the scene at 275 Seaside Road about 9:55 p.m. and were met by a “large crowd ... leaving the area”, the report said.

The deputy saw a group of people surrounding Moore who was on the ground, the report said.

Soon after the deputy arrived, Moore stopped breathing and his pulse started to fade.

“While still applying pressure to his wound, a female who I could not identify, advised she was a nurse and began CPR,” the report said.

Deputies secured the scene and the Sheriff’s Office’s Crime Scene Unit worked overnight interviewing witnesses and collecting forensic evidence, the release said.

A suspect in the shooting has not been identified.

An autopsy will be conducted Wednesday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston to confirm the cause and manner of death.

In an unrelated shooting, a Beaufort veteran and Charleston DJ, Nathaniel Scott, Jr., was killed in November 2018 when shots rang out at a party in the woods on Lady’s Island. More than 100 people attended the party put on by an entertainment group, according to previous reporting in The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette.

Anyone with information about the St. Helena shooting should contact Corporal Dario Sosa at 843-255-3435 or Crimestoppers of the Lowcountry at 843-554-1111.
