Police release sketch of suspect in Wednesday’s shooting of Beaufort jogger
The Beaufort Police Department has released a sketch of a suspect who shot a 72-year-old woman jogging in Beaufort’s Pigeon Point neighborhood Wednesday.
The sketch was based on a description from the shooting victim, who told police the suspect is between 5’8” and 5’10” with a slender build, police say.
“The shirt is as close an approximation of what he was wearing that the victim can recall, but she is positive on the facial characteristics,” a department news release said.
Beaufort Police spokesperson Capt. George Erdell told The Island Packet on Friday that the relationship between the shooter and the woman is unknown. He said there is no known motive yet or obvious connection to other cases. Residents are encouraged to report anything suspicious to dispatchers, he said.
Witnesses to the shooting say the victim was jogging west on Lafayette Street near the Basil Green Sports Complex when a vehicle pulled in front of her.
The suspect, a man aged 25-30, got out on the driver’s side of the car and fired a number of shots at the woman with a handgun, a news release said.
“The victim was struck at least once by gunfire and transported to Beaufort Memorial Hospital, where she was stabilized prior to being taken to MUSC (the Medical University of South Carolina) by air ambulance,” the release said.
A call to police about the status of the victim was not returned Saturday.
