Jasper County Sheriff's Office

A 76-year-old woman was arrested Thursday on charges of fatally shooting her husband in their Jasper County home earlier this month, according to a Jasper County Sheriff’s Office release.

Dorothy Smith, of Early Branch, faces charges of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

On March 2, deputies responded to the couple’s home and found 71-year-old James Herman Smith dead in the kitchen of an apparent gunshot wound, the Sheriff’s Office and county coroner previously said.

Dorothy Smith is being held at the Jasper County Detention Center.

Deputies had responded to the Smiths’ home in the past for verbal altercations, but did not see any signs of physical abuse or fighting during those calls, Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Det. Sgt. Jake Higgins said.
