Jasper Co. man killed by gunshot to chest after domestic incident, autopsy shows

A Jasper County man found dead after police responded to a domestic incident Monday night died of a gunshot wound to his chest, autopsy results show.

Jasper County Coroner Martin Sauls conducted the autopsy Thursday and identified the man as 71-year-old James Herman Smith. Law enforcement officials are still working to establish whether charges should be brought, according to Sheriff’s Office Det. Sgt. Jake Higgins.

Deputies arrived after 6 p.m. Monday to a home in the Grays community after receiving a call about a domestic incident between a husband and a wife. They found Smith dead in the kitchen, according to Higgins.

A .357 bullet round caused the wound to Smith’s chest, said sources close to the investigation.

The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating.
