Hilton Head mom witnessed shooting while driving to gated community, report says
A Hilton Head Island woman called the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Saturday afternoon after witnessing a shooting in the Spanish Wells neighborhood, according to a police report.
The shooting was one of four incidents in the area where police were called over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, according to Beaufort County Sheriff’s reports.
Around 2:15 p.m., the woman called police to report a shooting she witnessed while driving on Spanish Wells Road passing Muddy Creek Road, the report said. The woman said she was driving to Spanish Wells Plantation to drop off one of her child’s friends when she saw the shooting near the intersection and “quickly drove away.”
The woman was unable to provide a detailed description of the shooters, but gave a description of the vehicle, according to the report. Deputies spoke with another witness who saw the shooting, and gathered shell casings at the scene.
Maj. Bob Bromage, spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, said no one was injured in the shooting. The incident is under investigation.
Deputies are also investigating two other incidents that took place on Muddy Creek the day before the shooting, according to Bromage. Bromage said they are looking into possible links among the three incidents.
Just one day before the shooting, police were called to the same location at Muddy Creek and Spanish Wells roads about an armed robbery.
A man told police he was riding his moped on Bryant Road to meet his friend to pick up Thanksgiving leftovers around 7 a.m. Nov. 29 when two people jumped out of a vehicle and showed a knife, according to the police report. One yelled at him to stop and give him money.
The man told police he was afraid for his life. He gave him the money he had, then escaped and called police. The armed robbery is still under investigation, according to Bromage.
Hours later, police were called to Muddy Creek Road after a different man reported an armed robbery at a home. The man was “uncooperative,” according to the report, but told police four men walked through his door and approached him with a gun. The man had blood and lacerations on his face and was then taken to the hospital.
While at the hospital, the man told police he knew where the suspects were from, but refused to give any more information about them, according to the police report.
On Nov. 28, police were called to a different house on Muddy Creek Road when a resident dialed 911 and hung up after she said she was being threatened with a gun. The woman told police she was afraid Dwayne Gibbs, 22, of Hilton Head, would kill her.
On Nov. 29, a warrant was issued for Gibbs for second-degree assault and battery and pointing and presenting a firearm, which is a felony.
As of Monday, Beaufort County deputies were still attempting to locate Gibbs. If you have any information on Gibbs’ location, call the sheriff’s office at 843-524-2777.
