Man pulled gun on woman at popular Bluffton bar in 3rd crime there this month, report says
A man trying to steal a woman’s purse pulled out a hand gun and pointed it at multiple people at a popular Bluffton bar recently, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office report. It’s the third time in the past month that sheriff’s deputies have responded to the location.
Beaufort County deputies responded to Cheap Seats Tavern 2 on Burnt Church Road after a bartender called 911 on Nov. 16,
around 9:45 p.m. about a weapons complaint.
Deputies interviewed two victims and two witnesses about the incident.
A man told police that a man he didn’t know grabbed his girlfriend’s purse from where she was sitting at the bar. The man’s girlfriend then grabbed her purse back from the unknown man and started yelling at him., according to the report.
Then, the unknown man pulled out a handgun and pointed it and the woman and her boyfriend, all four witnesses told police.
The suspect then left through of the front door, and witnesses were unable to see where he went, according to the report.
A bartender called police and locked the front door. The bartender said he’s seen the suspect before at Cheap Seats but did not know his name.
The bartender said the incident should be on the bar’s camera system, but it would take several days to get it to police, according to the report.
Other incidents
A woman called police after she was “ripped out” of her car by her hair and thrown to the ground by a group of unknown females in the parking lot of Cheap Seats Tavern 2 around 10:30 a.m. Oct. 27, according to the police report.
The woman told police she saw a younger man who appeared to be in distress and was surrounded by several women, according to the report. She said she worried the man might be on drugs and could be taken advantage of, so she stopped her car and approached the group.
She said four or five women then blocked her from approaching the man and threatened her, the report said.
The woman said she got back into her car but was “ripped out by her hair and thrown to the ground,” the report said. They took her purse, but she snatched it back.
Only one witness at the scene would speak with police, according to the report. The witness, who was one of the women in the group, told police that the argument was never physical.
There were no video recordings of the incident and no visible injuries on the woman, so the officer decided not to seek a warrant.
On Nov. 2, a safe with cash inside was stolen from the bar sometime after three employees locked up and turned on the security alarm at 3:30 a.m.
Maj. Bob Bromage, spokesperson for the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, said last week that investigators were looking into video from the two incidents.
