A member of a violent Lowcountry street gang was sentenced to 20 years in prison Friday for his role in four separate shootings over the course of four years.

Dashawn Trevell Brown, aka “TOB” and “Shawny,” 24, of Walterboro, pleaded guilty to conspiracy and racketeering charges in federal court in Charleston along with eight other members of the Cowboys gang that originated in the Eastside area of Walterboro.

The others — Khiry Broughton, Clyde Naquan Hampton, Matthew Rashuan Jones, William Lamont Cox, Bryant Jameek Davis, Zaquann Ernest Hampton, Christopher Sean Brown and Quintin Fishburne — were sentenced in November for their roles in criminal activity related to the Cowboys gang. Their sentences ranged from around 12  1/2 years to time served.

Brown’s sentencing was delayed until December because his attorney was unavailable, according to Department of Justice public affairs specialist Nicole Navas.

The men were accused in multiple drive-by shootings and other shootings in the Walterboro area, along with drug distribution and robbery charges between 2010 and 2015. A Justice Department news release says the gang was aligned for a time with the Wildboys gang that originated in the Green Pond area.

The news release, citing Brown’s plea deal, detailed four incidents in which Brown was involved:

▪  May 12, 2011: Brown was identified as the shooter after an encounter with a rival gang member. He also was identified as having fired shots at a retaliatory shooting on May 14, when a bystander was hit with gunfire and seriously injured.

▪  June 30, 2013: Brown fired shots in a drive-by shooting aimed at members of a rival gang in Walterboro. The news release says Brown later encountered a victim he shot in the arm and told him, “I should have killed you.”

▪  July 14, 2013: Brown fired shots at people coming out of Starlite Lounge in St. George after Cowboys members dressed in gang colors — including red, white and blue bandanas — exchanged words with a patron they believed disrespected them. At least three people were shot and injured.

▪  Nov. 6, 2015: Brown was among a trio of gang members accused of attempted murder after a dispute related to betting over a drag race outside Walterboro. The winner of the race and another bystander were shot and severely injured.

Brown also was sentenced to three years of supervised release and restitution for those injured as a result of his criminal activity, according to the Justice Department news release.
