Update: Preliminary autopsy finds no obvious cause for Stoney's death; further tests needed

A preliminary autopsy to determine the cause of death of a Lady's Island man found dead Sunday in a wooded area off of Big Ben Lane turned up no obvious clues.

Toxicology tests and further medical studies now are needed to determine how Terrance Lashawn Stoney, 37, died, the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

Stoney was last seen by family members at his residence on Big Ben Lane on Saturday in the early evening hours, according to the Sheriff's Office.

His death was reported around 4 p.m., and the department's Crime Scene Unit responded to the scene.

Bromage said Stoney's body was sent to the Medical University of South Carolina for the autopsy.

Results from the additional testing might  not be available for up to six weeks, the sheriff's office said.

The investigation is ongoing, according to the release.

Bromage declined to say how Stoney died, citing the ongoing investigation.

Anyone with information regarding the Stoney's death can call Cpl. Jason Malphrus at 843-255-3426 or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CrimeSC to remain anonymous.
