UPDATE: SC Highway Patrol has released details of Friday’s fatal Hardeeville-area wreck

A fatal wreck that shut down a prominent highway north of Hardeeville Friday involved a dump truck and pickup, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The Highway Patrol released details on what caused the collision Saturday morning.

The driver of a Chevrolet pickup traveling south on U.S. 321 was trying to pass other vehicles when it collided with a northbound dump truck, the Highway Patrol said. The pickup ran off the road and overturned.

The driver of the pickup was killed in the crash, the Highway Patrol said. That person’s named was not released by the Highway Patrol and the Jasper County coroner could not be reached Saturday morning.

The collision, which occurred at 6:53 a.m. Friday on U.S. 321 near the old Charleston Highway north of Hardeeville, resulted in U.S. Highway 321 being closed down, which caused significant backups in the area.

Traffic maps showed significant backups near the intersection of Deerfield Road (U.S. 321) and Old Charleston Highway after a fatal crash closed the roadway the morning of March 6, 2026, according to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office.
