Flight cancellations are piling up at Savannah-Hilton Head airport. ‘It’s not good’
The approaching winter storm, which is anticipated to make driving dangerous, is also impacting air travel.
While the National Weather Service is recommending that drivers stay off the roads once rain and then snow move into the area Saturday afternoon, dozens of flights have been canceled at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport and Hilton Head Island Airport.
“It’s not good,” Lori Lynah, a Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport spokesperson, told the Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette Saturday.
The commercial airport in Savannah serves Georgia and coastal region of South Carolina.
As of 12:30 p.m., there had been 29 departing flight cancellations and 33 arriving flight cancellations, Lynah said.
Airlines make the decisions about cancellations, so passengers need to stay in touch with them for rescheduling information, Lynah said.
Airlines are issuing travel waivers and adjusting schedules as conditions evolve, the airport said. SAV is recommending passengers confirm their flight status with their airline before heading to the airport.
“I have been canceled twice from Chicago because the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport is refusing planes in 40-plus degree weather,” one passenger wrote Saturday morning. “Chicago is moving at 14 degrees! I would like to get home!”
“We’re sorry to hear your flights is canceled,” the airport replied. “Please keep in touch with your airline as they determine flight cancellations not the airport.”
Lynah said morning flights took off but “I don’t think anything is going to go out this afternoon.”
The storm is having impacts on larger airports in Atlanta and Charleston (CHS), which is affecting flights at Savannah-Hilton Head, said Lynah, noting 34 departing and 39 arriving flights have been canceled at CHS.
Two American Airlines flights from Charlotte to the Hilton Head Island Airport on Hilton Head also had been canceled, according to the airport’s website. That airport, located directly on Hilton Head Island, is not part of the larger Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport.
