Record-breaking cold expected as Hilton Head area prepares for snow
Record-breaking cold is expected to hit the Lowcountry this weekend as the region braces for up to two inches of snow.
An extreme cold weather advisory is in place for Beaufort County from late Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning, with wind chills dipping into the single digits early Sunday, according to the National Weather Service Charleston’s Saturday morning report.
Saturday night into Sunday is expected to be the coldest time period. Temperatures could reach as low as 19 degrees on Sunday morning, with a wind chill as low as 4 degrees, according to NWS.
Snow is expected to start between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., although it could start as early as 11 a.m. Rain in inland areas, possibly mixed with sleet and freezing rain, will transition to snow across the region in the afternoon.
Between 1 and 2 inches are expected for Beaufort County, but residents should prepare for up to 2. Snowfall is expected to stop between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m. Sunday, as dry air comes in from the south and west.
Sunny skies are expected for Sunday and Monday, which should promote the melting of snow. Sunday’s high is expected to be 36 degrees in Beaufort County, warming up to a high of 45 degrees Monday.
Wind gusts in the 12-hour period between 7 p.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. Sunday are projected to be about 31 mph.
The National Weather Service will brief again at 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
