Drone video shows significant damage to Port Royal’s boardwalk after Helene

This video, shot with the aid of a drone camera, shows how Tropical Storm Helene destroyed a portion of the Henry Robinson Boardwalk.

The popular boardwalk where Battery Creek and the Beaufort River meet will be repaired, according to city officials.

In 2017, a similar portion of the boardwalk was taken out by Tropical Storm Irma.

The repairs could exceed $100,000 but the structural integrity of the remaining boardwalk, its pavilion and observation tower need to be evaluated before the Town of Port Royal can begin repairs.

The town will also see if the durability of the boardwalk can be improved, Town Manager Van Willis said Monday.

Video shows that the majority of the damage was to the southeastern end from the likely brunt of the Beaufort River tide pushing up river from the winds of Helene.

The winds and tides were so strong that several boats moored upriver in the Beaufort River were even pushed onshore onto a local resident’s yard.
