Everyone gets an Aldi? Beaufort says discount grocer planning north of Broad store, too
An Aldi discount grocery store is coming to Beaufort next year, the city announced Thursday.
The 21,000-square-foot store will be located in Beaufort Station, a more than 200,000-square-foot retail plaza where site development will begin this year at the southwest corner of Robert Smalls Parkway and Parris Island Gateway, city spokesperson Kathleen Williams said.
The announcement comes on the heels of confirmation that Aldi will open a store in Bluffton by the end of 2022.
Aldi announced Tuesday it was planning an aggressive expansion in the Southeast. Specifics about locations in South Carolina were not included in the formal announcement.
The Batavia, Ill.-based discount grocer that started in Germany has about 2,000 stores in 36 states, according to its website. The company says it is on track to become the third-largest grocery retailer by store count by the end of 2022, trailing only Walmart and Kroger, according to foodindustry.com.
Currently, the closest Aldi to Beaufort County is a 22,399-square-foot store in Pooler that opened in October 2019.

Developer The Morgan Companies, which specializes in commercial real estate, previously announced that 31-acre site, located just across the Parkway from Walmart and Cross Creek Plaza, will include Hobby Lobby, Ross Dress for Less, Ulta Beauty and Old Navy.
The shopping center’s design received final approval from the City’s Design Review Board at its Jan. 13 meeting. Site development is expected to begin the first quarter of this year.
