Who will be Beaufort’s next police chief? City accepting applications for top post

The city of Beaufort has opened its police chief search after the death of Matthew Clancy in July as the department prepares for its first new leader in more than a decade.

A job opening for the city’s top law enforcement officer has been posted publicly on the city’s website and also with the Municipal Association of South Carolina and other relevant websites. Applications will be accepted through Sept. 21 and early interviews with candidates will begin a week later.

There’s no firm deadline for a candidate to be hired, city spokeswoman Kathleen Williams said.

“We want to make sure we get the right person for this position,” she said.

Deputy Chief Dale McDorman was named the interim chief after Clancy died of cancer July 29.

McDorman has been with the agency since 1995 and deputy chief since 2010. Before that, he was a sheriff’s deputy and a law enforcement officer in the U.S. Air Force.

The job posting asks for 10 or more years of progressive experience and 7-8 years of command management. The new police chief will earn a starting salary of $95,000-$115,000 and reports to City Manager Bill Prokop.

Clancy was with Beaufort Police Department for 23 years and was named chief in 2008. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2015.
