Beaufort is getting a new barber shop. Here’s when it will open, how to get a free cut

A familiar barber shop with an old-school style will open soon in Beaufort, but it’s celebrating early with a day of free haircuts this week.

Barbers of the Lowcountry, a Bluffton business that caters to men’s cuts and related services, expects to open a new location in Beaufort Town Center on Boundary Street in early March.

To mark the move, the shop will offer free hot dogs and free haircuts from its mobile shop in front of Bi-Lo in the shopping center from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday.

“We’re getting a lot of good feedback from the residents of Beaufort,” owner Brent Nelson said. “Everybody’s been friendly and welcoming. ... We thought it’d be a good chance to meet the community.”

Nelsen and his father, Lou, started the business in 1997. Bill Rickett is leaving the Bluffton shop in Sheridan Park to lead the new operation and is in the process of hiring new staff for Beaufort.

Barbers of the Lowcountry offers straight-razor shaves, hot towels, beard trims and other specialty services, and charges different prices based on the experience of the barber.

Beaufort will become the shop’s flagship store and include an expanded waiting area and beer or wine and baked goods while you wait, Nelsen said. The Bluffton location will be remodeled once the Beaufort shop is off the ground, he said.

The business could eventually expand, Nelsen said. Franchises in Pooler, Georgia. Okatie and Jacksonville, Florida, are possibilities for future locations.

Nelsen said he first scouted Beaufort a couple of years ago and didn’t settle on a location he liked. A regular client from Beaufort recommended the Boundary Street shopping center and the former KMart building, which was being renovated into separate retail spaces.

The transformed building is now home to numerous businesses. Grounded Running, a specialty store for runners, and Wild Birds Unlimited are part of the new building.

A distillery is expected to open soon in the garage bays facing Boundary Street and will offer tastings and sales of the product made on site.
