A new 540-ft. boardwalk is opening in a north end Hilton Head subdivision, giving residents and visitors easy pedestrian access to nearby Fish Haul Beach.

The Hammock Breeze neighborhood, on Hilton Head’s north side, is getting a new boardwalk, starting at the end of Hammock Beach Way and providing private, pedestrian access to the beach. Nix Construction built the structure, Homeowners Association President Rick Gillette said. It cost about $500,000 and was funded through homeowners’ association fees.

The building process took around four years of communication with the South Carolina Office of Coastal and Resource Management and the Department of Environmental Services, Gillette said. The town of Hilton Head also reviewed the proposal, which added another year of delay in the permitting process, he said.

The subdivision is around five years old and is currently separated from Mitchelville and Fish Haul Beach by Barker Field. Hammock Breeze is small, with just 42 homes, 30-40% of which are short term rentals, Gillette said.

Easier access to Fish Haul Beach

The new boardwalk will create easier access to Fish Haul Beach, according to Gillette. Residents previously had to walk or drive along roads to access the beach.

Gillette said the boardwalk is intended to add value to the neighborhood.

“It symbolizes our community’s commitment to enhancing property values, improving quality of life, and providing future generations with access to the natural beauty that makes Hilton Head Island such a special place to live and visit.” Gillette said in a June 17 press release.

The community will celebrate the new boardwalk on July 4. The event is open to Hammock Breeze residents, guests and community leaders. The time for the event is to be determined, according to the press release.
