Driver killed in wrong-way collision on Beaufort County highway, troopers say

One person was killed in a wrong-way crash in the Okatie area Wednesday night, state troopers said.

It happened around 11:15 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of S.C. 170 (Okatie Highway) and Oldfield Way, the latter route serving as the entrance to the Oldfield Club gated community.

A 2019 Infiniti QX50, traveling south on the northbound side of the highway, then struck a 2009 Toyota sedan traveling north “head on,” Ridgeway said.

The driver of the sedan was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Infiniti was taken to Savannah’s Memorial Health University Medical Center for their injuries, according to the SCHP.

It was unclear whether the wrong-way driver would be criminally charged for the fatal crash. The case remained under investigation as of Thursday afternoon, SCHP spokesperson Nick Pye said.

The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office had not yet identified the deceased driver.

Wednesday night’s deadly collision marked the sixth traffic fatality in Beaufort and Jasper counties so far this year. Four of those deaths stemmed from a series of unrelated crashes during the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend.
