Downtown Beaufort highlighted on Fox & Friends ‘Main Street USA Tour.’ Here’s where they visited
Downtown Beaufort made its mark on the nation Tuesday morning, as Fox News Channel’s Fox & Friends “Main Street USA Tour” traveled along Bay Street.
Host Steve Doocy began the broadcast along the waterfront with Bonnie Gordon, the current owner of Southern Sweets, who recommended the show pay a visit to Beaufort.
“You can’t do a small town USA tour without coming to Beaufort,” said Gordon. “There’s nothing like it.”
Doocy carried on by sharing his connection to the Lowcountry and his family's visits for over 20 years.
From the town's history to landmarks like the Richard V. Woods Memorial Bridge and movie scene locations, including “Forrest Gump” and “The Prince of Tides,” Doocy highlighted all aspects of the Beaufort community. He even took a golf cart tour with Bill Reynolds of Beaufort Tours to cruise through the Bay Street area.
From there, Beaufort Mayor Phil Cromer guided Doocy through Bay Street, visiting local businesses like Lulu Burgess, Southern Sweets, Bay Street Outfitters, Rhett Gallery and more.
After trailing along the historic streets of downtown Beaufort, Doocy ended the tour at 8 a.m. at Blackstone’s Cafe, inviting guests and viewers to participate in the Pledge of Allegiance. This daily ritual began more than 30 years ago by cafe founder Roger Blackstone Alley and his neighbor, Dr. Lanny Krauss.
“This was such a great experience, and it was so special that it got to happen here,” said Lucinda Gonzales, server at Blackstone’s Cafe.
With walls packed both upstairs and downstairs, the broadcast shared a special tradition and slice of downtown Beaufort with the nation.
“We love our community and we’re here today because we couldn’t imagine calling anywhere else home,” said Evelyn Jenkinson, a five-year Beaufort resident who moved to the area after spending 27 years in Connecticut.
