An unidentified Beaufort County inmate was found dead in their cell during a “routine check” Saturday, in what officials are considering a suicide.

Corrections officers at the Beaufort County Detention Center attempted to revive the inmate after discovering them, according to a county press release, but were unsuccessful. The inmate was pronounced dead at the scene.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division was contacted to open an investigation into the death, as is “common procedure” with inmate deaths, according to the release.

“Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of the deceased inmate during this difficult time. We are cooperating fully with SLED’s investigation and are committed to ensuring that our detention center continues to provide a safe environment for its inmates,” County Administrator Eric Greenway said.

The county is providing grief counseling to staff involved, according to the release.

The last instance of a suicide in the county detention center reported by The Island Packet occurred in June 2021. The Packet does not identify victims of suicide.
