Hilton Head’s back on top! Island once again ranked No. 1 best beach town in the South
Hilton Head Island is back on top of Southern Living’s annual rankings of the best beach towns in the South.
The magazine announced Tuesday that Hilton Head was No. 1 on its 2022 list of best beach towns. Readers voted for the selections.
Hilton Head was No. 2 in 2020 and No. 1 in 2019.
The island was not included on last year’s list, when magazine editors selected their “favorite hidden gems.”
An article from Kaitlyn Yarborough announcing the 2022 list said this about the Lowcountry town:
“It’s hard not to love this classic beach village on the Carolina coast. Serenity is waiting around every moss-draped, tree-hugged corner, from the wide, uncrowded beaches to the miles of shady bike paths. (Don’t forget to rent a bike for your stay, preferably with a little gold bell.) It’s almost a sin not to start the day with brunch at either The Salty Dog Café or Hudson’s Seafood House On the Docks. On Hilton Head Island, eating seafood and ordering a cocktail is not only acceptable, but recommended, before noon.”
The magazine also said:
“With twelve miles of shoreline, breezy golf courses, and natural beauty aplenty — including salt marshes, wildlife refuges, and pristine gardens — this Lowcountry beach town is more than its shores, though those are certainly some of the best on the Atlantic. A vacation on the Hilton Head seashore is an opportunity to enjoy the sun and the sand, so rent a bike, take a stroll, or just settle on the beach and listen to the waves.”
Tybee Island, meanwhile, placed second on the magazine’s list of best beach towns. Edisto Beach was ranked No. 11.
In a separate set of rankings, Coligny Beach recently placed 16th in Tripadvisor’s 2022 list of the 25 best beaches in the United States.
