Columbia man dead, 2 others injured after truck strikes tree in Sun City, officials say

A Columbia man died and two other people were transported to the hospital after a truck crashed into a tree Monday morning in Sun City-Hilton Head, according to S.C. Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at 7:15 a.m. on Sun City Boulevard, said Master Trooper David Jones, Highway Patrol spokesperson.

A 2003 Ford F250 carrying three people was traveling down the main road when it ran off and struck a tree, he said.

The backseat passenger, who was “unrestrained,” was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was identified as 45-year-old Gilberto Domingo Martin, according to the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office.

The driver, who was also not wearing a seat belt, and the front seat passenger were transported by EMS to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah for non-life threatening injuries.

The crash is still under investigation.
