Coroner identifies Beaufort woman found dead inside apartment after fire

The woman firefighters found dead inside a Beaufort apartment Sunday afternoon was identified Tuesday as Joy Elizabeth Troupe, 46, according to the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office.

Troupe lived in the apartment where the fire occurred, coroner Ed Allen said.

An autopsy to help determine Troupe’s cause and manner of death is scheduled for Wednesday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, Allen said.

Around 2 p.m. Sunday, the City of Beaufort/Town of Port Royal Fire Department responded to a report of a fire at an apartment on Greenlawn Drive near Beaufort Town Center. According to previous reporting, heavy smoke was coming out of the roof of the duplex.

After extinguishing the fire in about 5 minutes, firefighters discovered the woman’s body.

The cause of the fire and smoke, which was contained to the one apartment, was not immediately known and is being investigated by the S.C. Law Enforcement Division.
