Police investigating death of woman whose body was discovered after Beaufort fire

Editor’s note: The latest information, including the identity of the woman found, can be found here.

The body of a woman was found inside a Beaufort duplex Sunday afternoon when firefighters responded to a call at an apartment complex on Greenlawn Drive near the Beaufort Town Center.

When the City of Beaufort/Town of Port Royal Fire Department arrived a little after 2 p.m., heavy smoke was coming out of the roof of the home, a department news release said.

As fire crews extinguished the fire, which took about five minutes, they discovered the woman’s body.

The fire and smoke was contained to the one apartment.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known, according to a Beaufort Police Department media report.

The S.C. Law Enforcement Division is investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire.

The identity of the woman was not being released Tuesday morning pending the notification of next of kin, the Beaufort County Coroner’s office said.

This report will be updated as information becomes available.
