A centuries-old plantation located on a sprawling 1,640 acres along South Carolina’s picturesque ACE Basin is on the market.

Poco Sabo Plantation, listed for $16.5 million, may be attractive to a buyer who loves history, hunting, conservation or all three.

The property is in the Green Pond community in Colleton County, roughly 30 miles from downtown Beaufort.

“Poco Sabo is a place of recreation, modern land management, and nature conservation,” the listing boasts. “The plantation contains a great variety of plant and animal habitats, well-regulated historic rice fields, pecan orchards, cultivated agricultural fields, and managed forests.”

The plantation’s name originated from the native Indian tribes in the area in the late 1680s.

Most known in its early days for producing rice, likely with the use of enslaved labor similar to other plantations nearby, the tidal rice fields are some of the property’s most significant historical structures remaining. There’s also a historic family cemetery plot and small tabby ruin.

The current owners purchased the property in 1994 and led restoration efforts to update the 7,500-square-foot main house and auxiliary buildings. Today, other buildings on the land include a manager’s house, guest cottages, equipment sheds, stables, kennels, a greenhouse and exercise pavilion, according to the listing.

Recreation options include equestrian trails, fishing, hunting, bird watching and watersports.

Poco Sabo is co-listed with Plantation Services and Crosby Landy Co. To view this property, visit crosbylandco.com or plantationservicesinc.com. Showings are by appointment only.
