Things might just be looking up for the old Pineland Station site

After months of inactivity at the old Pineland Station, where the Sea Turtle Marketplace is being built on Hilton Head Island, and questions from residents, government officials and the project’s contractors about the shopping center’s future, there is good news to share.

Kevin Kiernan of Sandcastle Constructors, the contractor on the project, said Friday morning that it had received the money owed to it from Virginia-based developer Wheeler Real Estate Company on Thursday and can get back to work.

Wheeler ordered the contractor to halt construction on the site in May.

Soon after, Tommy Smith, president of Sandcastle Constructors, filed a $890,801 mechanics lien with the Beaufort County Register of Deeds against former and current property owners for work performed and materials supplied on the project.

I’m excited to get back out there and ready to start building.

“I’m a bit relieved that (payment) finally occurred,” Kiernan said. “I’m excited to get back out there and ready to start building.”

Jon Wheeler, the developer, said everything is finalized and ready to go.

“There will be people out there next Monday doing certain things,” he said. “And then you’ll start seeing more aggressive construction.”

In the meantime, Kiernan said Sandcastle Constructors would be reaching out to subcontractors while preforming some remedial work before resuming construction on the site.

“It’s just going to take a little while before you start seeing significant activity again,” he said.

Sea Turtle Marketplace is still expected to be the future home of PetSmart, Another Broken Egg and Kitchen & Company.
