Here are the businesses readers said they’d like to see open in Beaufort County
We asked our readers: What new businesses would you like to see in Beaufort County?
When the open and non-scientific survey ended Sunday night, more than 125 of our readers had made their opinions known, some offering multiple suggestions. The greatest number of nominations went to Trader Joe’s, with 66 people wishing they didn’t have to drive to Mount Pleasant to shop at their favorite grocery store.
Many respondents wanted duplicates of chains that are already in Beaufort County but not in their part of the county. A second Target location (now only in Bluffton) and a second Fresh Market (now only on Hilton Head) were popular nominations.
Another category of readers wanted “something for the kids,” such as a water park, arcade, bowling alley or roller skating rink. Wrote one respondent: “Beaufort county is home to thousands, this isn’t just a place where old people retire!”
And a number of our readers filled out the survey saying “none.” They cited concerns about the lack of workers and the threat to local businesses from big box stores. “Don’t ruin Beaufort,” wrote one reader. “Once it’s gone, it’s gone.”
The majority of respondents, however, were not afraid to wish big for their favorite national chains.
We’ve listed the Top 8 nominated businesses in our poll below. Crate and Barrel, Krispy Kreme, Total Wine and More, and Wegman’s just missed the cut.
Let us know which business is the most wished for, in your opinion. Can anything surpass the desire for a nearby Trader Joe’s?
Vote as often as you like — this is meant to be fun and not scientific — through midnight Saturday, and we’ll plan to share the results next week.
