Goodwill opens second thrift store in Bluffton. Where and when you can shop

Thrifty shoppers have another place to look for bargains as Goodwill opens the doors to its new store in Bluffton.
Goodwill hopes those making donations will have an easier time at the new location too, because of its more central location at 4 Godfrey Place, between the Bluffton Parkway traffic circle and Target.
The store’s grand opening was Thursday, Oct. 21.
“We want to be accessible for donations but also for career services. We want to serve as many people as possible,” said Deirdre Mays, director of communications for Palmetto Goodwill.
Roughly 350 people each year will be served through Goodwill’s Career Opportunity Center at the new store, and Mays said 90 cents of each dollar raised by the store supports the nonprofit’s program.
Specifically, the career centers offer job training and certification programs along with resume and interview help. The programs are geared toward those who have encountered barriers in the workplace, such as those with a disability, veterans, or seniors who need help growing to their skills to in a rapidly changing workplace.
“There’s so much that people can take advantage of in terms of the education we can help them get,” Mays said.
Mays said there are no plans to close the original Bluffton Goodwill store at 509 Island Park West.
Palmetto Goodwill also has two thrift stores on Hilton Head, including a GW Boutique that specializes in designer items, and a store in Beaufort.
The new South Bluffton Goodwill store is 1,500 square feet and is still in the process of hiring employees. The goal is to hire 18 people, Mays said.
Donations are accepted anytime the store is open, and those needing items picked up can call to arrange a time.
As with any thrift store location, most of the fun is finding that unexpected item or great deal.
“You can find everything from dishes and cookware to art and wedding dresses,” Mays said. This includes brand-name items and some clothing with the tags still on.
Her best thrifting tip: “Personally it would be to be patient. ... I have to be ready to go through the racks and definitely to look in the backs of the shelves.”
