A discount grocery store withdrew its application to open on Hilton Head. Here’s why

Lidl withdrew its application for final approval during the Town of Hilton Design Review Board on Tuesday, according to town officials.

The German discount grocer did not have the full documentation needed nor had it completed all recommended changes to the design of the building, said Charles Cousins, director of community development.

It is not abnormal for businesses to withdraw applications from municipal review boards because of similar issues.

The company is expected to resubmit its application and go back before the review board at a later date.

The next Design Review Board is Jan. 9.

Lidl is seeking approval to build a store at the intersection of Mathews Drive and William Hilton Parkway in the Sea Turtle Marketplace.

It opened its first 10 stores in the United States in June and plans to open 100 stores on the East Coast by next summer.

Plans were submitted in June 2016 to open a store in Bluffton as well, but there has been little movement on that. Plans also were submitted to open in Beaufort earlier this year.
