SC’s Katie Arrington, Rep. Nancy Mace are coming to Bluffton. Here’s when to see them

Two of three candidates competing in the primary for South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives seat are speaking at events in Bluffton.

Both events are open to the public and hosted by the Greater Bluffton Republican Club.

Trump-endorsed Katie Arrington will speak on Wednesday night, May 4, and Rep. Nancy Mace will be at a meeting May 9. The events are at Venue 1223/Downtown Deli on May River Road with social hour starting at 5:30 p.m. and the speakers at 6 p.m.

State Attorney General Alan Wilson will also be at the May 9 event.

SC’s 1st Congressional District

The race for this seat that represents all of the Palmetto State’s coast has been hotly contested and closely watched by the nation in recent years.

Arrington, who previously served as a state representative, had a surprising win over Rep. Mark Sanford during the 2018 GOP primary with former President Donald Trump’s endorsement in that election. She was defeated by Democrat Joe Cunningham in the general election, turning a traditionally always-red seat to a blue one that cycle.

Then in 2020, political-newcomer Nancy Mace won the GOP nomination and beat incumbent Cunningham for the seat.

Arrington and Mace have had a tense campaign season.

Arrington called for Mace to take a drug test after she attended a marijuana conference in Miami. Mace’s team fired back saying Arrington should take a lie detector test about losing top security clearance at the Pentagon for allegedly leaking classified information.

Lynz Piper-Loomis, an advocate for military veterans, is also running for the GOP nomination.

Whoever wins the GOP primary on June 14 with face multiple opponents again in November’s general election. Those who have filed include Democrat Annie Andrews, Lucus Devan Faulk with the Labor Party, and Joseph Oddo with the Alliance Party.
