Hilton Head’s lantern parade is back in 2021! Here’s the plan this year

The lantern parade on Hilton Head Island will be back in full swing this year.

More than 1,800 islanders lit up the night sky in 2019 for Hilton Hilton’s now-annual lantern tradition, but the 2020 event was limited due to COVID-19 precautions, with people setting up homemade lanterns in their driveways, yards, balconies or doorsteps.

This year, residents will be returning to the beach with their glowing puppets.

The 2021 parade will be held Saturday, Nov. 13. It will kick off at the Alder Lane Beach Access around sunset at 5:45 p.m. Participants will walk to Coligny Beach Park.

The parade lineup is at 5 p.m. Additional information about logistics and parking can be found online at: bit.ly/HiltonHeadLanterns

There also will be a drive-thru event Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park, 226 Beach City Road, during which residents can cruise by a collection of lanterns.

The free event began in 2019 as a celebration of the history, ecology and people of Hilton Head. For the inaugural parade, residents made lanterns that looked like Lowcountry boils, Mitchelville cabins, sea turtles and lighthouses.
