Stuck at home? Check out this hit Netflix show filmed near Beaufort

Beaufort County residents may recognize a few landmarks in Netflix’s new show about North Carolina’s Outer Banks.

“Outer Banks,” although set in the Tar Heel state, was filmed throughout the Lowcountry, with scenes in Charleston and Beaufort County’s Hunting Island State Park.

It’s become a hit for those sheltering at home amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The show, which premiered April 15 on Netflix, features a group of beach-born teenagers known as the Pogues who find themselves on the hunt for sunken treasure and family secrets. Throughout the hunt, however, the Pogues are also stuck in a class struggle against their rich-kid counterparts the “Kooks.”

The show’s lead actor described it as “kind of like ‘The Goonies.’”

The show first created buzz in Beaufort County last May, when Netflix announced that extras were needed for filming at Hunting Island State Park. The casting call asked for those with a “preppy look” who could be comfortable in the sun for six hours or more.

The show was originally supposed to be filmed in Wilmington, N.C., but was moved to the Palmetto State because of the controversial anti-transgender North Carolina bathroom bill.

The show was filmed in South Carolina from May 1, 2019 to Oct. 9, 2019, according to IMDB.
