High school sports, March 31: Cheyenne Strong’s perfect game fueled by 14 Ks
Cheyenne Strong struck out 14 of the 15 batters she faced Wednesday in pitching nearly the ultimate perfect game, leading Thomas Heyward to its 15th consecutive softball victory with a 17-0 shutout of Hilton Head Island.
Strong, a sophomore, did not allow a ball in fair territory as the remaining out was recorded on a foul tip into catcher Hannah Cannon’s glove.
Strong also helped propel the Rebels’ offense with four hits, while Sydney Glassberg went 5-for-5 with three doubles and three RBIs. Bayli Belger drove home two more runs for Thomas Heyward (18-1), while Cannon, Ivy Bryan and Morgan Peeples had two hits apiece.
Battery Creek 6, Bluffton 2: Alexis Ortiz scattered six hits in a complete game and contributed two hits at the plate as the Dolphins notched their eighth consecutive win.
Julianna Greer also had two hits for Battery Creek (8-2), driving home one run and scoring another, while Jessica Shipley ripped a two-run single in the third. Journeigh Doray scored twice after a single and a walk.
BASEBALL
Hilton Head Island 5, Hilton Head Prep 0: Carmen Mlodzinski struck out 12 in pitching a two-hit shutout as the Seahawks beat their cross-island rivals at the Seahawk Invitational.
Koty Brigham and Tad Zmarzly each had two hits for Hilton Head Island (5-6), with Brigham adding two stolen bases. Mlodzinski also stole two bases in a 1-for-2 batting performance.
Gavin Hurlbut came up with both hits for Prep (8-6), including a double. Starter Tyler Fox gave up three hits and two earned runs in four innings, striking out seven.
Pinewood Prep 6, Beaufort 5 (9 inn.): Brice Adkins went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Drew Luckey added two hits as the Eagles succumbed in extra innings at the Hanahan Invitational.
Connor Clancy, Jeffrey Smyth and Cooper Woods all went 1-for-3 at the plate for Beaufort (11-7).
BOYS’ TENNIS
Hilton Head Island 4, St. Charles 2: Tate Steinour, Will Advocaat, Alex Ittenbach and Sam Rothwell all won singles matches to lead the Seahawks (9-4).
Ittenbach survived in a 12-10 tiebreaker in his opening set against Trevor Kurtsmals, then put the match away with a 6-0 second set. Rothwell went to a third-set tiebreaker in his match before prevailing 10-3.
Beaufort Academy 6, Whale Branch 0: James Carden, Daniel Richards and Lawrence Lindsay all surrendered one game or less as the Eagles swept singles with straight-set victories.
The only Beaufort Academy player pushed was William Lindsay in the No. 1 singles, winning a first-set tiebreaker before taking the second set 6-2.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Beaufort Academy 5, St. Andrews 0: Ryan Muniz and Thomas Roddey scored two goals apiece as the Eagles (7-1) controlled the play.
Joe Bhoi tallied the Eagles’ remaining goal, while Muniz added an assist to his ledger.
BOYS’ LACROSSE
Myers Park 13, Hilton Head Island 8: Taylor Rozek scored three goals and Duncan Marx added two as the Seahawks suffered just their third loss of the season.
Layton Kirby, Jack Flowers and Logan Johnston added one goal apiece for Hilton Head Island, while Colin Courtney paced the defense with 12 groundballs and three takeaways.
