7 Sand Sharks selected for weekly honors by Sun Conference
USCB athletes have claimed seven Player of the Week honors from the Sun Conference after last week’s performances, including a sweep of all four accolades in track and field.
Quinton Ferguson won the men’s field honor after breaking his own school record in the pole vault, clearing 3.25 meters at last weekend’s Savannah State Orange & Blue Classic.
Brandon Gourdine (110 hurdles) and Betsy Douglas (1,500 meters) won top track honors after winning their races and reaching “B” qualifying standards for the NAIA nationals. Hunter Dye was selected for women’s field honors after top-12 finishes in four events — javelin, hammer and discus.
Elsewhere, Matt Kianka was baseball’s player of the week after a 12-for-22 week with nine RBIs from the leadoff spot as the Sand Sharks won all five of their games last week. Ashlie Layman earned softball honors with three wins at the Gulf Coast Invitational, taking a no-hitter into the seventh in her only loss.
Franzi Knoetsch was named the league’s top golfer after a third-place finish at last week’s Armstrong Pirate Invitational. She kept the momentum going Tuesday by winning the Callaway Women’s Collegiate in Georgia.
