U.S. 278 in Bluffton a litter dump

The other day, while returning to our home in Bluffton from Hilton Head Island, I noticed the roadside of U.S. 278 in Bluffton was awash with litter.

This was not your garden variety plastic bags, beer cans and soda bottles (although there were plenty), but a mattress, some carpeting, as well as assorted building materials.

The situation was even more noticeable because the U.S. 278 roadside on the island was nice and neat.

Later, just to make sure I wasn’t overreacting, I took a walk along U.S. 278 between Bluffton and Simmonsville roads. It was just as bad, with an old tire mixed in with the usual litter.

I’m not sure if or how anti-littering campaigns are implemented, or when this mess can be cleaned up, but it would seem that it might be time for our citizenry, neighbors and public officials to take serious notice of this problem before our community turns into a real dump.
