Sarah Sugg was standing with her grandpa outside of his Hilton Head Island home in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew when she decided to capture a shot.

The Hilton Head teenager’s photo, “Paul meets Matthew,” shows her grandfather surrounded by fallen limbs outside his damaged home, staring up at more of the October storm’s destruction just outside of the image’s frame.

Just a few days after Sugg, 17 and a senior at Hilton Head Island High School, published the photo to Instagram, it was recognized by National Geographic as one of the magazine’s Daily Dozen, an online feature curated by the publication’s editors.

“I believe this image captures the reality of damages done by hurricanes and storms,” associate photo editor Matt Adams wrote of Suggs’ image on Monday. “Where your grandfather is standing works well in this frame as he is surrounded by the large fallen trees. The emotion you captured here on his face as he surveys the scene is powerful. Nice work!"
