If I stay, will I be able to travel freely during and after the evacuation?

Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Bob Bromage said that though all county residents are asked to evacuate by 3 p.m. Wednesday, residents should be able to travel freely throughout the county for the time being.

That includes driving on roadways that are planned to have lane reversals. One lane of U.S. 278 will be reversed by 4 p.m. Wednesday from Spanish Wells Drive to Moss Creek Village Drive to create three lanes.

But for now one lane will remain open to traffic heading back onto the island, according to the S.C. Department of Transportation.

The same is true for U.S. 21, which will be reversed to create three lanes between the intersection with Parris Island Gateway and U.S. 17. One lane will remain open to traffic moving back toward Beaufort.

If weather conditions worsen or if traffic flow needs to be managed that is subject to change and some restrictions on travel may have to be put in place, Bromage said.
