US Rep. Kevin McCarthy withdrew his name from consideration to be House Speaker on Oct. 8, right before the GOP was about to hold an initial vote. McCarthy faced opposition from a bloc of 30-plus hardline conservative lawmakers who didn't command the numbers to block him in the secret-ballot elections, but might have prevented him from winning a floor vote later on.
