Daufuskie Island residents to be surveyed on incorporation, other priorities
Should Daufuskie Island form its own town?
That is among the issues Daufuskie residents have the chance to weigh in on through a new survey available this week.
The survey asks residents what they believe are the most important issues and amenities for their community in the next few years, including environmental issues, solid-waste disposal, ferry service and community groups.
The Daufuskie Island Council is hosting the survey to try to better gauge what issues the island's elected leadership group should tackle this year.
The survey also asks residents how important municipal incorporation should be to the council. Earlier this year some island residents and council members pitched the idea that the island would have more control over development and services if it formed its own town. It is currently in unincorporated Beaufort County.
The council is considering raising about $15,000 to hire researchers at Clemson University's Strom Thurmond Institute to study possible governing options, and the survey out now will gauge islanders' support for the incorporation effort.
