Hilton Head town Manager Steve Riley isn’t taking his talents to the Lone Star State — at least not yet.

Last month, the long-time town official was named one of five finalists for a city manager position in San Marcos, Texas. But, according to a news release from the city, Riley didn’t get the job.

Bert Lumbreras, who currently serves as the assistant city manager in Austin, Texas, has been tapped for the role, according to the release.

“I have strong ties to San Marcos. I started my government career as an intern with the City of San Marcos while attending Southwest Texas State University,” Lumbreras said in a statement released Tuesday by the city.. “I’m looking forward to the opportunity to come full circle in my public service career in this leadership role and work with an active and vibrant community, a passionate city council and a talented staff.”

San Marcos Mayor John Thomaides said in a statement that city council members, “with input from staff and the community, unanimously agreed that Bert Lumbreras is the right person to work side-by-side with council and staff to lead our community,”

“Lumbreras is a seasoned professional who understands the unique challenges and opportunities in San Marcos and has proven experience leading a dynamic team,” Thomaides said.

Last year, Riley was a finalist for a city manager position in Savannah and a city administrator position in Davenport, Iowa.

At that time, he cited conflicts with mayor David Bennett as the reason for his job search.

Riley has been Hilton Head’s manager since 1994 and has worked for the town since 1991. Previously, he was a planner for the city of Beaufort and Beaufort County, along with a private consulting firm in the Midwest, according to the town’s website.
